Thirsty Thursday: Magicale

On a recent trip to the Disneyland Resort in California, I decided to try a sparkling wine at the Wine Country Trattoria.  I admit, I am no wine connoisseur, so I totally picked one by its name.  I have about a 30/70 chance of that actually working out for me.  This time, however, it succeeded beautifully!  I was in Disney, so naturally I had to try something with a Disney-fied name.  Magicale!  You can’t get any more Disney-fied than that!

Magicale is a sweet, yet complex sparkling wine in a deep red color.  Like I mentioned, I am no wine connoisseur; these are my own descriptions.  I don’t want any Asti Monferrato oenophiles rolling their eyes at me.  (By the way, Asti is the region in Italy where Magicale comes from, and an oenophile is just a fancy name for a wine nut)

The gentleman who was pouring asked if I had ever tried it before; apparently it has quite a loyal following.  He revealed to me the legend that this was the exact same potion Cleopatra used to seduce Julius Cesear, and is known throughout Italy as the wine of passion.  After one sip, I realized that this wine could ensnare anyone’s taste buds.  I am a firm believer in that Cleopatra story now!

Not long after, on a trip to Walt Disney World, I noticed the wine was on the menu at Citricos, as well as several other resort bars.  I highly recommend you sample a glass the next time you find yourself in The World!  It isn’t cheap though, as it will run you about $12-$14 a glass.  Sweet as it is, it’s a wine to savor and not gulp.

On a side note, if you fall in love with this wine as I did, there really isn’t much that compares.  The Banfi Rosa Regale is the closest I’ve found, and is certainly more readily available, but it does not even come close in complexity in my opinion.  The Vendome Wine and Spirits does carry it from time to time online.  Luckily, my hubby was diligent and managed to snag me 3 bottles!

Xoxo, Ami

  1. I'm pretty sure I'd've picked it by the name too, Ami! I'll have to keep an eye out for that one next time I'm making a run to the border.
