Thirsty Thursday: Captain's Rum Runners

As much as I enjoy trying new things, there is that little piece of me that remains a creature of habit.  One of the first experiences I partake of after getting settled in at Disney World, is to proceed to a relaxing pool lounge chair, let my daughters swim, and savor a Rum Runner.  To me, this kicks off vacation with a deep breath and a sigh of, “I’m here.”

I became infatuated with Rum Runners several years ago.  My hubby and I were chatting with our Disney bar tender friend, Enrique, and we asked him what his favorite vacation beverage was.  And so the tradition of Rum Runners was born!

The drink is a fruity concoction, but not overtly sweet.  The flavor is tropical and refreshing.  A warning: sip slowly.  You may be a weary traveler by this point, thirsty and ready to relax but please don't gulp!  "This here cocktail be strong as ye most burly of sea storms!" said in my most convincing pirate voice.

Most every resort on property makes a similar version of this drink.  There are two, that I’ve experienced, that are slightly different.  Caribbean Beach Resort serves it as a frozen concoction.  I wasn’t as thrilled with that, personally.  In my opinion, the freezing turned it into any old slurpie cocktail you could get any old where.  Quite frankly, it turned it into a chick drink (this coming from a girl who likes chick drinks). Animal Kingdom Lodge has their own African rum, and I have to say, the flavor was unique and oh-so yummy.

The recipe I posted is from the Wilderness Lodge where Enrique works and where we first tasted our tradition-in-the-making!
